Like much of Indian dance that had fallen into disrepute by the early 20th century, Odissi dance, became remote from its sacred roots. Removed from the temples, its idiom was preserved as Gotipuas; a traditional dance form of Odisha where young boys dress up as woman to praise Lord Jagannath. Guru Padma Vibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra was one of these dancers, known as gotipuas. Later in his life he did extensive research on Gotipua and Mahari dance, which lead him to restructure Odissi dance. Guru Padma Vibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra was a master in Percussion- instruments Mridangam, Pakhavaj and Tabla , which clearly resonates in his dance compositions. He was also skilled in the traditional Pattachitra painting.
